Why privacy is the deciding factor
Adobe Acrobat uploads your files to Adobe servers when you use the web app or cloud features. Stirling-PDF never sends your documents anywhere, because you run it on your own server. Redaction that is actually redaction
Many free tools offer "redaction" that is really a black rectangle drawn over your text. Anyone can select the text underneath, copy it, or delete the rectangle. PDF Studio deletes the covered text from the file at export — the bytes are gone. Adobe's redaction (paid) and Stirling-PDF's do the same. Honest caveats
PDF Studio does not do everything yet. Text editing needs a real text layer (scanned pages go through on-device OCR first). Replacement text uses Helvetica metrics, so on exotic embedded fonts the match is near identical, not glyph perfect. The on-device AI runs small models (0.5B to 1B): great at summarizing your document, not a frontier model. There is no real time collaboration and no cloud sync.
